What is Early Intervention?
Early intervention (EI) in the field of speech-language pathology focuses on addressing delays or disabilities that affect the typical development of skills in children from birth to age three. Some states allow Early intervention services to continue through age 5. EI services seek to support development to allow the child to meet key milestones and increase the child’s likelihood for success in school and beyond.
The early intervention team for a student may include a speech-language pathologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker, or other mental health professional, developmental specialist, audiologist, nurse, and family members. EI services are outlined within an Individual Family Service Plan and address the individual needs of the child in the following developmental areas:
Communication
Cognition
Physical, such as fine or gross motor skills
Feeding and swallowing
Sensory Processing
Adaptive or self-help
Social-emotional
Best Practices for Early Intervention
