eLuma is committed to impacting lives with the help each and every individual on its team. We want to make sure that you have the chance to get to know these people through our Meet the Team series. In this profile, we feature Bonnie Sirko, who is one of our fine speech-language pathologists who is making a difference every single day.
Bonnie’s Story
I grew up in northern Ohio but raised my children in Nashville, TN. I was a late bloomer and didn’t start college until I was in my thirties! I graduated from the University of Memphis with a Masters Degree in 1998 in speech-language pathology. I’ve worked in just about every environment including rehab, home health, traditional schools and a residential center for severe/profound developmentally-disabled adults.
On working at eLuma?
Until I began working at eLuma, my favorite working environment was in home health because I was able to get to know families and make a connection between their therapy program and home environment. I find that same connection with my online students and love being a guest in my students’ homes. Working with eLuma, I often meet the entire family–including the family pets. I have daily access to parents/learning coaches and am able to answer questions and/or provide suggestions to help parents support their child’s therapy goals.
If you weren’t a Speech-language Pathologist, what would you do?
If I weren’t an SLP, I’d be an oceanographer. I’m pretty sure I was a dolphin in a prior life.
Favorite Free Time Activities
I love to swim, garden and sail–but most of all, I love spending time with my family.
Most Unusual Job
My first job was working at a residential center for severe/profound developmentally-disabled adults. I worked with the geriatric population and individuals with psychosis associated with their cognitive disabilities. We had a great team, and I learned so much more than I ever did in school.
Favorite Place Visited
I come from a sailing family. We charted and sailed our own catamaran through the Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea. We were also able to spend time in Athens. It was the most incredible traveling experience I’ve ever had.
Robot housekeepers, flying cars, or moon cities?
Robot housekeeper! To never have to clean my house again would be heaven!
