What is an Accent?
An accent, or dialect, is the variance in the way people from different regions or national origins speak the same sound. Accents are not speech or language disorders but are simply natural differences that are part of any spoken language. If an individual wishes to modify his or her accent, a Speech-Language Pathologist can support them in the process.
Why Accent Modification?
Some people seek out accent modification in order to be more easily understood by others. Accent modification may be explored with a Speech-Language Pathologist in situations such as:

Researchers Derwing and Munro (2009) described three dimensions of an accent that contribute to communicative effectiveness (via https://www.asha.org/Practice-Portal/Professional-Issues/Accent-Modification/):
Accentedness: The degree to which an accent is perceived by the listener through the listener’s comparison of the accent to the speech patterns of the listener’s community.
Comprehensibility: The ease of comprehension of the speaker’s message, based on the time and effort required for the listener to process it.
Intelligibility: The level to which the listener actually understands the message.
