Articulation & Phonology with eLuma
eLuma offers unparalleled online speech therapy solutions for articulation and phonology. We know that the key to helping these students is to first see and then unlock their incredible potential, but it all starts with their ability to communicate. Our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can provide all of the same required services live and online, through a fully-secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, as they can in person — and can do so with a high degree of effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility. We love working with these kids and find great satisfaction in seeing them progress and succeed.
What are Articulation and Phonological Disorders?
Articulation disorders
- Articulation disorders present with errors in the production of individual speech sounds, such as sound distortions or substitutions. Some articulation errors are age-appropriate, based on the typical age of acquisition as determined by norm-referenced data. For example, a common substitution for very young children is a /w/ for /r/ substitution, as /r/ is typically a later-developing sound. When such errors persist beyond the expected age and have a significant negative impact on the student’s education, the student may be considered for speech therapy services.
Phonological Disorders
- Phonological disorders impair a student’s ability to understand and use phonological processes. These disorders present with rule-based errors that affect more than one sound. There are phonological processes that are typical throughout a child’s development, but if the use of these processes persist beyond the expected age, or are atypical in presentation, the student may be considered for speech therapy services. For example, “cluster reduction” is a typical phonological process in which consonant clusters are reduced to a single consonant for easier production but, in typical development, is eliminated by the time the student reaches school-age.
