Communication Disorders & eLuma
eLuma offers unparalleled online speech therapy solutions for most communication disorders. We know that the key to helping these students is to first see and then unlock their incredible potential, but it all starts with their ability to communicate. Our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can provide all of the same required services live and online, through a fully-secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, as they can in person — and can do so with a high degree of effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility. We love working with these kids and find great satisfaction in seeing them progress and succeed.
What are Communication Disorders?
Speech Disorders
Articulation disorders involve impairments in speech sound production, including sound omissions, substitutions, and distortions.
Voice disorders are characterized by vocal pitch, quality, loudness, duration, or resonance that is atypical for the individual’s age, gender, and/or culture.
Fluency disorders affect the flow of speech, characterized by abnormal rate or rhythm, and may result in repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, partial words, or phrases.
Language Disorders
Receptive language disorders affect a person’s ability to comprehend language. These disorders can negatively impact a student’s ability to understand academic material, follow classroom instructions, and interact socially.
Expressive language disorders impact individuals’ ability to use language. These disorders can negatively affect a student’s ability to express their thoughts, wants, and needs. They may also affect social interaction.
Other Disorders
Hearing disorders are impairments in the physiology of the auditory system and are present in individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Central auditory processing disorders involve deficits in the processing of auditory information that are not the result of a hearing or intellectual impairment.
Treating Communication Disorders
eLuma’s treatment for Communication Disorders focuses on capitalizing on the individual’s strengths, improving functional skills, and creating support systems to help compensate for deficits. The eLuma online speech therapy team and the individual Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in the treatment of these individuals. They work in collaboration with the student’s interdisciplinary team, which may include: the special education administrators, the general education teacher, special education teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and/or mental health professional.
