What are Receptive Language Disorders?

In the school environment, a receptive language disorder can negatively impact a student’s ability to comprehend academic material, follow classroom instructions, and interact socially. Receptive language disorders affect students’ comprehension of language aspects related to its form, content, and/or function — as described below.
Form
Phonology: The sound system and rules related to sound combinations of language.
Morphology: The aspect of language related to the structure of the meaningful units of words.
Syntax: The order and combination of words in sentences.
Content

Semantics: The meaning of words and word combinations in sentences.

Pragmatics: The system of language related to its use in functional and social communication.
Treating Receptive Language Disorders
eLuma’s treatment for Receptive Language Disorders focuses on capitalizing on the individual’s strengths, improving functional skills, and creating support systems to help compensate for deficits. The eLuma online speech therapy team and the individual Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in helping the students progress.
